Museum het Schip

The cathedral of social housing

Amsterdam's most spectacular example of Amsterdam School architecture — a building that looks like a ship — opens for a night of design and social history.

Museum het Schip ('The Ship') is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Amsterdam — a monumental housing block designed by Michel de Klerk in the Amsterdam School style, completed in 1921. The building's expressionist brick façade, curved forms, and intricate detailing make it look more like a sculpture than an apartment building. On Museum Night, the museum offers guided tours of the building's exterior and interior, including a reconstructed worker's apartment from the 1920s. Architects and historians discuss the Amsterdam School movement's radical vision of dignified housing for the working class, and its lasting influence on Dutch architecture.
