The story of Amsterdam and its people

Dive deep into the history of Amsterdam — from its origins as a fishing village to its role as a global metropolis — in a night full of stories.

The Amsterdam Museum tells the city's story through the eyes of its inhabitants, past and present. On Museum Night, the museum opens its newest permanent exhibition 'Amsterdam DNA', exploring the four core values that have shaped the city: freedom of thought, entrepreneurship, civic spirit, and creativity. Special evening tours focus on Amsterdam's role in the global spice trade, the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic, and the city's complex history of colonialism. Local storytellers and historians bring the exhibits to life with personal narratives and surprising connections to the present day.
