A quirky and fascinating museum dedicated entirely to smoking pipes — from ancient clay pipes to ornate meerschaum masterpieces.
Housed in a beautifully restored 17th-century canal house, the Amsterdam Pipe Museum holds the world's most comprehensive collection of smoking pipes. On Museum Night, the museum opens all five floors of its collection, including rooms normally closed to the public. Curators lead tours that trace the history of tobacco and smoking culture from pre-Columbian America to the Dutch Golden Age, when Amsterdam was the centre of the global tobacco trade. A special evening programme includes a talk on the symbolism of pipes in Dutch Golden Age painting, with examples drawn from the Rijksmuseum's collection.
