The Amsterdam City Archives opens its vaults for a night of historical discovery — maps, photographs, and documents that tell the story of the city.
The Amsterdam City Archives (Stadsarchief Amsterdam) holds over 75 kilometres of documents, maps, photographs, and other materials relating to the history of Amsterdam, dating back to the 13th century. On Museum Night, the archives presents a special programme exploring the history of Amsterdam through its most remarkable documents. Archivists guide visitors through highlights of the collection, including the original city charter of 1275, historic maps showing the city's expansion, and photographs documenting life in Amsterdam through the 20th century. A special exhibition focuses on the archives' collection of personal diaries and letters, offering intimate glimpses into the lives of ordinary Amsterdammers across the centuries.
