Amsterdam Dungeon

The dark side of Amsterdam's history

A theatrical journey through the darkest chapters of Amsterdam's history — plague, witch trials, and the Spanish Inquisition — brought to life by live actors.

The Amsterdam Dungeon is a theatrical experience that brings the darkest chapters of Amsterdam's history to life through live actors, special effects, and immersive sets. On Museum Night, the Dungeon presents a special extended programme that goes beyond its usual show to explore the historical context of the events depicted. Historians lead pre-show talks on the Black Death in Amsterdam, the persecution of witches and heretics, and the role of the Spanish Inquisition in the Low Countries. The theatrical experience itself is then presented, followed by a Q&A with the actors and historians. Not for the faint-hearted.
