Amsterdam's newest museum celebrates the richness of Arab art, music, literature, and culture in a beautifully designed space in the heart of the city.
MAQAM — named after the Arabic musical concept of a melodic mode — is Amsterdam's newest museum, dedicated to Arab art and culture. The museum's collection spans contemporary art, historic artefacts, music, literature, and film from across the Arab world. On Museum Night, MAQAM presents a programme that showcases the diversity and vitality of Arab cultural expression, with live oud and percussion performances, a screening of a contemporary Arab film, and a guided tour of the collection led by the museum's curators. A special installation by a Dutch-Moroccan artist explores the experience of living between cultures in Amsterdam.
